Design
Creating the minimalist design for Red Phone posed a unique challenge. The pursuit of simplicity and cleanliness in the design presented manufacturing complexities. It took approximately 18 months of meticulous effort to achieve the final aesthetic, involving the development of over 40 distinct proposals. Perhaps we went above and beyond, but that’s simply the perfectionist approach we embrace.

Our inspiration drew from the timeless design traditions of India, blending Zen aesthetics with the essence of nature. The comfortable grip and minimalist form evoke the smooth contours of a stone. We value aesthetically pleasing objects that evoke joy, an element we felt was missing in the current feature phone landscape.

Message Only: Designed for times when you seek connectivity with minimal distractions. Your phone will log into the network at specified intervals (default every 30 minutes) solely for sending and receiving text messages. Incoming calls will not be accepted.
Toggle down for the Offline mode
For those times when you really want to focus, take a break, or fly (i.e. airplane mode), the final position puts the phone in a fully offline mode. We created this mode so that you can make the most of your precious time of uninterrupted focus. Use it when you’re doing the things you love most
Enjoy a comfortable, ergonomic keyboard.
While it may not align with current trends, we outfitted Red Phone with physical keys. Though not as straightforward to produce as touch screens, they often offer advantages in various scenarios. Test it out: can you still compose a message without looking?
Two-color flashlight functionality
White flashlights can disturb your family or disrupt your sleep. Warmer colors are more soothing. That’s why Red Phone features a two-color flashlight. Choose between white light and sunset light, closer to red, which aids melatonin secretion for better sleep quality.

Clear and legible E Ink display
Our modern, high-density 2.84” E Ink display boasts a resolution of 600×480 and a PPI of 270, supporting 16-grayscale, ensuring effortless readability even in normal light conditions (no frontlight needed). With a pleasant, paper-like feel, the screen offers a natural reading experience.
Personalized display illumination
Red Phone screen doesn’t emit direct blue light into your eyes. Unlike most smartphones with a direct front light, Red Phone features a special layer of reflective foil that directs light onto the display. This approach is more neutral for your eyes and shouldn’t disrupt your circadian rhythm.
Ultra-low Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)
Red Phone has been meticulously designed to achieve a favorable SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) value. To accomplish this, we engineered our antenna with an uncaptured position, a proprietary solution developed in-house.
Prioritizing safety with electromagnetic radiation
Researchers worldwide have raised concerns about the potential health effects of prolonged exposure to artificial radiation sources. While definitive answers remain elusive, numerous indicators suggest that electromagnetic fields may pose risks to human health. To err on the side of caution, particularly in certain circumstances such as cancer treatment or pregnancy, doctors often recommend minimizing exposure to cell phone radiation whenever feasible.

“SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) indicates the radio frequency (RF) energy absorbed by the body when using an electronic device. We’ll provide the precise SAR level after final homologation, but our engineers estimate it to be below 0.08 W/kg. That’s over eleven times lower than popular smartphones and over seven times lower than common feature phones.

Battery
At Ceiver, we challenge the notion that phones must be charged daily, disrupting our lives with this ritual. We’ve had our fill of crucial calls interrupted by dead batteries, scrambling for power adapters, or lugging around bulky power banks.

Our dedicated OS incorporates highly efficient power management. The E Ink display consumes minimal battery power, activating only when content needs to be updated, and virtually none during data transmission. While we’re still fine-tuning our solutions, we estimate a battery capacity of around 1600mAh.
Network
We were surprised to discover that many feature phone modems have limited bandwidth support tailored to specific geographic regions. This limitation stems from the evolution of radio frequency adoption, spanning from 2G to LTE networks over the years.

While we aimed to solely utilize 2G, the least impactful radio frequency, it’s being phased out globally. We dedicated considerable effort to sourcing a flexible, modern, and global GSM module suitable for travel worldwide. With user health at the forefront, Red Phone consistently selects the lowest spectrum available to minimize radiation exposure.

Additional SIM slot for enhanced flexibility.
Two nano SIM card slots facilitate seamless switching between cards while on the move. This enables you to use local SIM cards when traveling abroad, while keeping your home country SIM card securely in the phone instead of in your wallet (and can be activated anytime you need it, such as for wire transfers).
Red Phone can also function as a data modem.

We’re not opposed to technology or the internet. Rather, we’re against its overuse, particularly mobile internet. We believe that browsing the web with a decent screen and physical keyboard is simply more productive and comfortable.

Red OS is a lightweight mobile operating system developed in-house by our talented team. Optimized for the E Ink display and energy efficiency, the system is intentionally minimalistic and non-distracting, allowing you to focus on what’s important.

We selected the real-time operating system kernel FreeRTOS®️ as our foundation and crafted a bespoke operating system – Red OS. Tailored to our hardware, it ensures Red Phone’s swift performance and energy efficiency, boasting a boot time of just 5 seconds.
Red OS includes features typically found in smartphone operating systems such as Bluetooth headset connectivity, contacts synchronization, and system updates. To ensure our mobile operating system is secure, bug-free, transparent, and sustainable, we’ve made it open source.

Many tech companies overlook privacy abuse or misuse of provided data. With this in mind, we designed Red Phone to be inherently secure. By minimizing data usage, we’ve simplified our task. There’s no camera or internet browser, and you can easily switch off the microphone and Bluetooth.
